I sent the following comment to M$, I don't expect an answer from them but maybe one of you can help. The irony in their statement as to the cause of the problem is amusing.

Using MS Word 2003, I received an error message. I was told that the "problem was caused by Microsoft Office System Software" and that "[a]n update is available for [my] MS Office System product" which is MS Office Professional Edition 2003. When I went to your site to download the update (whatever it is), I was told that I couldn't use my usual browser; I had to use Explorer 7 or else you couldn't tell me what update I was missing. So I switched to MS Explorer 7 but then I was told I had to load Active X which I don't want to do. /_*So how can I tell what upgrades I need without using your software?*_/
