There was a product a few years ago (I think called Mirra) that acted as a home server or office server (based on size) that ran Linux.

You set it up and let it run.

Mirra got bought out and I have not heard much from them, but it did automated backups and the works using a Linux product.

A Mini would be too expensive for this.

Prices for Linux-based home servers are incredibly low. OWC has the
"NASPerform Network Storage Solution" with 500GB storage going for $210.
I have been using the Linksys NSLU2 for a couple of years now. That sells
for $60 (without disks).

The Microsoft Home Server runs Windows Server 2003 which I don't think
any sensible person would pick for trouble-free operation. However, the
price looks to be competitive. LaCie promises a version for later this
month with 500GB storage for $199.
