The wireless connection is obviously the issue.  But why?

It's as if the printer was plugged into a different computer (the router
is a very small, special purpose computer). While there are standard
protocols for computer-to-computer file sharing (SMB, NFS, AppleTalk) and printing (LPR, IPP, SMB, AppleTalk), I don't know of any standards for computer-to-computer scanner sharing. You may want to plug the scanner into a desktop computer, scan from it, then share the scanner output files with other computers on the network.
