It sounds like the settings for the visually
impaired were switched.

System Preferences-->Universal Access-->Display

There is a key combo which inverts the colors
to make them easier for some to read. You get
white text on a black background and all of
the colors get flipped like a negative or an xray.

In the control pane, you can flip it or
if someone is banging on the keys and they
hit the correct combo it will engage.
