I have a very small card reader that I keep in the [very small] camera
bag pocket with extra cards and battery. Stewart's reader may be just
the one you like--wish those were out when I bought mine. Your daughter
may be using her camera and want to view/edit/share photos when she
doesn't have her notebook with her, but can use someone else's pc
without carrying a cable.
Second question:
She got the Macbook Pro last September. Would getting an external USB or IEEE 1394 hard drive be beneficial for backup (i.e., would the Mac OS automatically back up like I've heard when an external hard drive is connected? (There is a name for this, but I can't think of it.)
Yes, it's very useful to have an external drive with a notebook. Leopard
TimeMachine works with FireWire and USB2 drives, but FW is faster and
more reliable. We "build" our own, usually with Seagate or Hitachi HD,
and combo FW/USB2 cases. I have a fanless MadDog case I really like, and
another no-name Chinese one with a fan--both metal and very nice. She
may want to buy a micro-drive and case since they're more portable.
Otherworld has some on sale this week. Just avoid the ones with the
retractable USB plug, since they're more likely to break and are harder
to fix. 3-1/2" drive enclosures cost about 1/2 as much.
