Recently this past summer, I signed up for my local Telco's 6 mp DSL Internet service.

Got the modem, hooked it up, changed the router info to log me in automatically, and I was off to the races one small program. Drop offs. Every so often I would drop off. My messenger programs would stop, and then start again.

I was wondering if I had a problem so I called tech support, and they called a guy out to check the lines. Turns out even though I live well close enough to the switch (your speed will drop off the farther you are from their switch) the technician said the signal was not strong enough to sustain 6 mps so he had them throttle me back to 1.5mp. Well that is not what I signed up for nor what I was paying for so I let them know. Turns out the quality of their lines cannot sustain the higher speed. Supposedly they have fixed it, but I am not going to bite until I know for sure they got it. Meanwhile the cable company has come out with 10mps service.

I will stick with my 5mps at present.

DSL depends on many different things to get a quality signal. Closeness to the switch, quality of their lines, quality of your lines, and finally the quality of their service.

We have a small regional Telco and their quality level is medium. Our Cable company is one of the top 5 but because all of the above figure into Cable service (except for #1) that means you may have excellent service with them in location A but lousy service with them in location B. Telcos tend to be more consistent.

Qwest. One of my friends who is on cox cable and lives about two miles away
gets regular download speeds of 12mbit. I count myself lucky if I get 1.
