As it turns out, and for whatever reason, my wireless router was
creating the problem I described earlier wherein sometimes I could not
connect to a certain site that I had been able to connect to a bit
earlier. My cable modem was cabled to the router, and my computer was
cabled to the router. I was not connected wirelessly, but rather by
cable through the ethernet port of the router.
I cabled the computer directly to the modem, completely bypassing the
router, and all the problems went away. I still cannot explain the on
again, off again nature of the problem when cabled to the wireless
router, the infamous LinkSys WRT54G, but at least I have solved the
mystery.
