I probably have complained before about IT managers, but I am in a
special case. I belong to a major university in the DC area, and my
school has a small but deficient computer service facility that must
cope with a very small budget. After the IT director, there are only
inexperienced students to solve problems.
The official word processor is MS Word. I can't execute this program on
my office computer because trying to do so results in a message to
insert the Word installation diskette, which I don't have. My
solution: use my own copy of WordPerfect instead, and use it to convert
to Word when needed.
When I try to print anything -- word processor or any other program -- I
have an error message that the connection to the printer is not
existent. My solution: bring my old inkjet printer into my office with
a parallel port connection to print out my documents (staff refuses to
print document emailed to them; besides, the lazerjet printer is
frequently out of ink because the budget can't afford replacement).
I don't have a scanner supplied by the school. I use an old scanner
(owned by me) with a parallel port that I switch ports by hand between
the printer & the scanner when needed.
Altho I am supposed to be the administrator for my office computer,
there are numerous programs that say that they can't execute because I
am not the administrator. My solution: I work at home for which I have
very much more computing power, both with hardware & with software.
When I see threads on this listserve about poor IT managers, I can
relate somewhat, but I know that some of the complaints are not as
severe as they might be.
Just a comment.
