KisMAC is illegal in Germany, since it's considered to be security
software. The Swiss don't care [I understand; I worked for a Swiss
company for 4 years]. The KisMac team moved to Switzerland,

At Macworld, were they using a Meraki box to get the signals? Or a mesh
antenna? I don't know what the record is, but a few years ago it was
fairly easy to set up an antenna with a 20 mile range. Might be more
now, and possibly illegal at WiFi frequency. Here's an old link to make
your own antenna out of an old PrimeStar dish and a few salvaged parts,
http://people.wallawalla.edu/~Rob.Frohne/Airport/Primestar/Primestar.html
-- has about a 10 mile range.
Now, how do I make KisMac speak to me? Where are the strings [text] that
identifies networks?
Betty
I just returned from several wifi training classes
at Macworld, San Francisco. Our instructor said that KisMAC is so
powerful that it is illegal to have it on your computer
in Germany. I am still trying to figure out the inner
workings of it myself.
He also demonstrated how to use an advanced
antenna with a 30db gain to get all wifi signals in a 12 mile radius,
log them, look for the key words USER, PASSWORD,
LOG IN very scary. KisMAC leaves no sign whatsoever
that anyone has intercepted your data stream.
Solution is to use WPA2 or
VPN to protect your privacy.
I USED to think the range of a wireless Access Point
was limited to 100 or 150 feet. And that someone had to
be within that range to snoop. Now I know better and
will act differently with all my customers.
