I came up with three sources on a google search for {car gps text
sms}. It looks like these things need to be powered by the car
because the battery life is pretty limited.

Try looking around the radio, trunk, under the seats and engine for
something about the size of an iPod. If he doesn't locate it it may
be worth contacting a PI who would be familiar with placing one
covertly.
If he does find it I would be tempted mail it in the slowest ground
based method possible to a general delivery box at a post office way
far away when she gets out of the hoosegow. Of course that could just
PO her further.
