I forgot to mention about a scam call claiming that it's from Account
Services for my credit card. I've received many calls like that from
people who refuse to identify themselves, but naturally want my credit
card numbers. I called Verizon and they said to use Call Trace to report
those calls and to block them. Enter your zip code on this page
http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/Phone/Calling+Features/Call+Trace/Questions+and+Answers/96525.htm,
and it gives details.
When I asked about tracking the scammers Verizon told me to report
unlawful calls to them this way. Once you receive two calls from the
party, dial *57, then 800.518.5507 immediately [so that the number
remains in *57 record], and report it. Warning: the *57 service costs
$1 in my region, but maybe not yours. I haven't tried it yet so I don't
know how effective it is. But it might be worth a try. It also can be
reported to the police.
Similar service is probably available through other phone companies. I
don't know how to set up blocking for cell phone service, but that
would be very useful too, even with caller ID.
