I concur with everything Matthew said. Don't pass up the chance to have
him analyze your resume. Targeting your resume correctly is essential.

>1) What's required to get an entry-level IT position (e.g. maybe the guy
>who's sole job is to install/update company software)?

I agree that it does not take that much to qualify for entry level. But I
think you can get a better position if you specialize. For example, you
can emphasize your existing knowledge of digital media or of Macs to jey
a job with a media or publishing company or a part of a company that does
this type of work.

>2) I'm 43. Is it unrealistic to think I'll be able to gain the necessary
>experience that would make me a desirable candidate for a position over,
>say, someone who's 10 years younger and been doing this for 10 years?

The most important skill is good judgement. You should have more of that
than someone 10 years younger. People skills are important as how you fix
a problem is as important as fixing the problem.

You can substitute a few certifications instead of going to school to
save yourself some time and money. How you interview is going to be
important. Go over the study book for A+ certification to get down the
tech jargon. Read some IT magazines to learn the current issues. A
junky-looking tabloid that usually has great survey articles on hard core
topics is "Processor" (processor.com).
