It means it can not boot from your FireWire drive. You wrote that this drive worked previously to start up a Mac, but I do not recall you saying that this drive was used to boot the Mac you have it currently connected to. Apple keeps making hardware changes and these often cause old boot disks to no longer work.
Boot using the OS X DVD that came with the computer or a newer OS update DVD. See if you can use that to update the OS on the external drive. >Tried that, as mentioned in a previous reply.
