On a related note (Microsoft under pressure to reduce OS prices),
there is
the following story about Vista:
<http://news.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/04/03/157225>
"The new Service Pack 1 version of Windows Vista allows end users to
purchase the 'upgrade edition' and install it on any PC — with no
need to purchase the more expensive 'full edition.' The same
behavior was present when Vista was originally released, but the
fact that the trick wasn't removed from SP1 suggests that Microsoft
executives approved the back door as a way to make the price of
Vista more appealing to sophisticated buyers."
I am more paranoid than that and suspect that MS will eventually put the
screws to anyone who uses this "trick", because it is so darn easy to
do and
likewise would have been very easy for MS to prevent, and they would
stand
to lose a lot of money once the trick becomes widely known. I won't
say what
the trick is, because Tom probably wouldn't like me doing so, but even a
novice could do it.

Trying to avoid an exodus to Linux on ultra low-cost PCs, Microsoft
will
allow discount computer makers to sell XP for an extended time (June
2010).
