If you are "handy" and want to re-use the paraphernalia that bind the two
batteries into a single pack and attach a cord with a proprietary plug/socket
on it, it isn't very hard, but is somewhat time consuming, at least for the
pack that comes in my APC Back UPS XS-1500. The individual batteries
themselves should be standard that you should be able to purchase generally.
If you live in the Alexandria, VA area, Arcade Electronics on General
Washington Drive off of Edsall Road (there is a connector) on the south, and
just East of I-395 should have them. The map shows it as the Edsall Shirley
Industrial Park. If you are near Leesburg, there is a general battery shop
just off, I believe, King St., but at any rate, the thoroughfare that enters
Lessburg from the South. Going west on the Greenway, exit at exit 1 onto US 15
south (the Leesburg "beltway," clockwise), and immediately (never leave the
ramp lane) exit US 15 south onto whatever name the street is and follow it
north.!
The battery shop is on the right, in a cluster of shops around a parking
lot, near the bottom of the dip just before you reach the center of town. Sign
is visible from the street, which is how I first discovered it. If you want to
buy the whole apparatus already assembled, I think you are stuck with buying it
from an APC authorized dealer. From the price you quoted for the assembly, I
suspect your batteries are bigger than mine -- last longer in a power outage.
Or you have the auxiliary pack that sits separately to the side of the housing
that has the electronics in it. They keep re-designing the physical housing
for these things for no apparent reason.

Be sure to replace both (all) batteries. Don't try to keep a "good" battery.
