The message I received isn't the one to which you refer. Everyone
will eventually get the "Your Backup Disk is Full" message. I got
that message myself a few weeks ago. And I did check "Do not show
this warning again." This warning message is actually a necessary
prerequisite for bringing on the problem I describe.
The error message I get now is to the effect that my backup has
failed: "Time Machine Error. The backup is too large for the backup
volume. The backup requires 371 MB but only 1.7 GB [sic] are
available." The backup failed, as does every subsequent hourly
backup attempt.
I confirmed that TM is not erasing old backups to make way for the
new -- again, this is only necessary once the disk is full -- by
going into the TM backup drive and manually erasing a couple of the
oldest backups. That solved the problem, for now. But the point
remains, once the backup drive is full, TM can fail to do its job of
erasing the oldest backups to make way for the newest.

Subject: Re: Time Machine Stops Erasing Old Backups
Then yesterday I got an error message that the latest incremental
backup had failed because the TM drive did not have sufficient room.
This is a much discussed event. Many people misinterpret TM's
informatory
message: "Your backup disk is now full." This is not an error message.
It is just letting you know that from now on it will be deleting old
files as it adds new ones. You should check "Do not show this warning
again."
