Whoops, I made the classic mistake of assuming things that might not be true - that you had a functioning tape playback and the issue was merely getting it to arrive at the recording software. First step would be to plug the tape deck into you home stereo and see if sound arrives there. A Revox A77 could easily be 30 plus years old and it's a fair bet that the deck problems. Virtually all electronic devices that old have bad electrolytic capacitors and the Revox probably has over a 100 such things. There is a metal trap door over the playback head of the A77 that engages when the machine starts. Be sure that the tape is within that trap door, against the face of the head or there will be no playback.

Based on all you've said I suspect your tape deck is in need of at least some repair if not a major overhaul. If this is something that you want to pursue on a hobby level the Revox would certainly be the machine to make the investment in. If this is a one time or short term project it would probably be more cost effective to rent a tape deck. If it's a very important project ( family heirloom sort of thing ) a local recording studio would have the hardware to do the transfers and the skills in software to edit and clean up the end result.

I detest 'on-board' technology because, that leaves the user at the mercy and idiocy, of the motherboard manufacturer. That is why I have the Audigy 2ZS

I connected the RCA-to-Stereo patch cable. The Line Input is active. While I have that active, the tape deck is still not recognized. I double-checked the positioning of the patch cable on, both, my sound card and, the tape deck. I didn't find any problem with the positioning.

I will check the tape heads to make sure they are coming in contact with the tape.
