Have you tried resetting your iPod?
Toggle the Hold switch on and then back off, then press & hold the
Select and Menu buttons for at least 6 seconds. The Apple logo will
appear when reset.

iPod will only start up with Menu + Select. Startup shows apple,

Diagnostic Mode, apple is backwards. I'm not sure of all the
diagnostic items. Does it need a new battery, or something else?
