With the eeePC at the low end and Apple at the high end:
How quickly will the middle market ($500-$750) shrink?
It won't. But that isn't the middle market. That's the commodity
market.
How profitable will it be?
There is only profit there if costs are low and volumes are high.
Will PC makers migrate up or down?
It doesn't matter. As long as you can build a decent PC for a
particular mission at 70% of the cost of a "name brand", with
better parts, the major manufacturers are irrelevant at the high end.
Depending on the mission, Apple isn't the high end.
