The idea of tagging is a powerful replacement for the old file-folder metaphor. The problem with the old file-folder metaphor was that a file could only be in one place at a time, unless it was copied (but copying files leads to bigger messes) or pointed to with aliases/shortcuts (but that leads to a different kind of messiness).
