The 20-30% savings can be worth it, but you need to consider the difference between refurbished and used.

Often I prefer to buy refurbished electronics rather than new. Anything that might go wrong has already been repaired. When you buy from the manufacturer, the refurbs can have the same warranty, Apple refurbs have full warranty. Our Apple and Onkyo refurbs are excellent quality and value. Denon was awful; it broke; I'm glad we didn't pay full price since they also broke and became refurbs that broke.

I rarely buy used electronics, except at yard sales. Even items that have been checked out by third party vendors as working may have hidden defects. When you buy refurbished from manufacturers, their techs have looked for and repaired the defects that may not be apparent to the casual user. Dell sells used Dell PCs and many of them are also reliable quality.

Some refurbs we've bought that still work fine:
2 HP iPods [I fixed the one that appeared
broken last month, it was just stuck]
        black iPod classic
Sony Trinitron monitor - 2000 [I wish it would die. It's
                still in excellent condition, but I want an LCD;
bought it at auction for $140 as refurb]
        iMac [iLamp]- 2002
        PowerMac G4 - 2001
        Dell Latitude -2004
        Panasonic boombox - 1988
        2 Sony boomboxes - 1992
        JVC VCR - ?
        Onkyo theater system - ? 2003
        Canon TLB SLR 1973?
Soligor 80-200mm zoom - 1974? It still works
on my Pentax K1000 since the older Pentax
broke after dropping it a 'zillion' times.
        etc.
        etc.
