Actually, that reminds me: I recall that I got a number of
kernel panics just before my Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer
failed. The panics had to be due to the mouse because
I noticed that they always occurred after I clicked on something
after the mouse had warmed up, and the panics went away
as soon as I replaced the mouse.
Since you have so few peripherals and haven't added to the
internals, I'd say it is probably reasonable to just try running
the computer without the sync cable and trackball now, then do
the intensive and definitive test Tom mentioned if you still
get the panics.
I don't usually follow sports, but watched Wimbledon because
I was visiting my sister and her boyfriend is a sports fan. He's
a good cook and a Monty Python fan, so I was disappointed that
no blancmanges were involved.

When you ran the hardware check, did you do the extended

Tell us about your system. What PCI cards do you have? Do you
have a hardware accelerator, or just the original processor?
David,
Thanks for the additional advice. I did do the extended mem test, and
then, just for anyhow, I guess, a 5-loop Rember test on Saturday. All
passed, though I know that doesn't guarantee solid hardware. The
system's pretty much as it came off the shelf, actually, these many
years ago (2001). No PCI cards, original processor; I think all I've
upgraded is the memory, and that was several years back, too. USB
Logitech trackball mouse & a Palm hot sync cable on the keybd, but
that's about it. But I'm thinking just writing to CGUYS was enough to
put the fear into it, because the computer was up all weekend with
nary
a hiccup. Heh. I know, the panic irregularity suggests hardware,
too. I
was forgetting about Wimbledon when I said troubleshooting was my
weekend entertainment, so I've been lazy and haven't opened the
case. I
will try to get there soon, though.
