In Thunderbird account settings [Tools>Account Settings>Server Settings] check the box "Leave messages on server". I do that for accounts that I share with my husband, or to retrieve email away from home.

For important email that I want to save [really important like my nieces' first day at school photos that I got today, and keeping track of rebates], I download messages to Thunderbird. I don't trust online email without duplicating it locally. I've had a dozen or so ISPs and email providers disappear since the early 90s, along with my email--some without notice.

Do you think GMail will last forever? I hope my Lonely Planet and United TRansnational Republics email lasts as long.

Betty
