I'm looking for instructions as to how to upgrade (to a larger
capacity) the hard drives on a G-5 iMac (now running OS 10.3.9) and a
two-year old MacBook (running 10.5 and Windows XP via Boot Camp).
Can anyone point me to step-by-step instructions - particularly how
to transfer the contents of the existing hard drives to the new ones
- perhaps by cloning (if that's the right term). Is it possible to
preserve the two partitions on the MacBook or would I have to
reinstall Windows? TIA....

David

First look up the specs for your iMac, http://support.apple.com/specs/#imac. OtherWorld Computing has a good database for hard drives and memory, http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/.

Apple has how-to-do-it manuals on the support site, http://support.apple.com/manuals#imac, also tips for iMac G5, http://www.apple.com/support/imac/g5/. Try this for the hard drive, http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/imacg5_HD17_DIY_EDU.pdf. Is your HD SATA or PATA? Yours may be SATA, check the Apple System Profiler [About this Mac] in the Apple menu.

How-To for iMac G5: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2278?viewlocale=en_US. XLR8yourMac.com has an unofficial upgrade page. Might void your warranty, if you have one.

I use Carbon Copy Cloner to move from one drive to another. SuperDuper is also a super duper program for cloning drives.

You may want to clone your new drive directly, using an external universal drive adapter, http://eshop.macsales.com/search/drive+adapter. I bought one a few years ago, and have used it many times to transfer data, and to check whether drives are working OK. One end connects to the drive, the other has USB2. If your drives are still working, get drive enclosures for them. USB/FW enclosures range from $20-40 for a decent one.
