Uninstall it from network connections first; then uninstall it from the
device manager (the actual ethernet in network adapters listing); then
reboot and let windows tell you it has found new hardware and install it and
you shud be gud2go...

Thanks for all the helpful tips. I now have the computer up and running, but
a different problem has emerged. The on-board Ethernet connection doesn't
work. It was working fine the last time the computer was running. As a
work-a-round, I've put in a wireless PCI board to get the needed updates and
AVG. I've never seen this happen before on any computer.

Any ideas on what might be going on with the on-board Ethernet connection?
