Oddly, someone told me this week that PHPBB (a web forum) has it's PM return receipts on by default, and there's no way to turn them off. I'm not sure I believe that, but it turned out to be an interesting concept.
How it works: Send a PM. It sits in your "outbox" until the recipient reads it. It's fully editable while it's in your outbox. Once they read it, it moves to your "sent mail" box, and becomes uneditable.
