Our rule of thumb for Sony BetaCam cassettes was 100 passes before automatic replacement. You can always check with the manufacturer for the official specs. As long as error free record/playback is not your goal, you can experiment with it. The dropouts will show up long before the tape self destructs. Keep in mind the quality of the recorded tape is also dependent on the condition of the record/playback equipment.
