A partition gets you nothing. Two partitions on the same drive are really just the same drive. I would consider the group of FireWire drives to be roughly the equivalent of one drive for this purpose. The bottleneck will be the capacity of the FireWire cable. The bottleneck will not be as bad as for partitions on the same drive, but not as good as independent drives.
