> A long, thorough, and clear-eyed review of Windows 7 worth reading... A clear-eyed review from AppleInsider. Right. You can practically smell the objectivity in this sentence: "Microsoft has to herd more PC users into the latest version of Windows ... so it can actively leverage its monopoly position to prevent competition...." Sentences like that are the hallmark of an unbiased, clear-eyed review.
> Windows 7 itself is internally called Windows 6.1 This was explained from the gitgo. It has nothing to do with whether it's a major or a minor release. It has everything to do with applications getting version codes that they understand--a lesson learned when some apps got all upset because Vista changed the major version number from 5 to 6 (yes, stupid code in the apps). (Remember, by the way, that XP was version 5.1--but I don't recall anyone saying that this was because it was really Windows 2000 SP2 or whatever.) >> Microsoft's executives have made no secret of the fact >> that Windows 7 is an incremental improvement to Windows >> Vista, with CEO Steve Ballmer calling it "Windows Vista, >> a lot better," and saying, "Windows 7 is Windows Vista >> with cleanup in user interface [and] improvements in >> performance." >> > Unlike what we were recently told here... Actually, that is pretty much exactly what we said. I look back and find quotes from us WFBs like "7 by all reports is no departure at all from Vista", "Win7 looks very much like Vista", "A lot of people are going to look at it and have the initial impression, 'Oh, this is Vista'", and "Seriously, it looks a lot like Vista. It's faster, and the organization is better, but it is much more like Vista than XP." > new "MinWin" kernel that Microsoft began talking about back in > 2003, [is] now being pushed off into the distant future As Jeff points out, this is flat wrong. There is, however, some pretty damning stuff in there. For example, "When Windows 7 arrives, it won't carry a long set of new features ... but will instead aspire to meet the demands of users...." Ouch! That one really hurts. Those Redmond guys, what were they thinking? ************************************************************************* ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *************************************************************************
