Let me label this just speculation.

I would suspect they are trying to prevent folks from doing exactly what you are doing. That is, home done upgrades. They make more money when you come back to them to upgrade your system (In other words buy a new box) It might or might not have to do with OEM licensing from Microsoft. It might also have to do with them only putting in hardware to support the current CPU and not wanting folks crying to them about their system not working like it used too when they do an upgrade.

Whatever it is, it is not unusual.

Sears does not manufacture a single applique!!!!!! Note that. They do not manufacture a single appliance. They sell rebranded appliances. These might be made by the national brands but they are made to Sear's specifications and the manufacturer will not service it as their brand. It may or may not use the same part numbers as a national brand.

This is not that unusual with store brands or brand names. Radio Shack was notorious for this years ago.

My laptop (which i related my problem with) is a Dell, but the video chipset on it is an ATI. Dell will only support their drivers on this chipset and not ATI's even though it is an ATI chipset.

This is not all that unusual.

So why does HP/Compaq lock up the BIOS? In their computer line they
offer the same Asus motherboard set up two different ways. The Asus
A8M2N-LA (HP relabeled Naos-GL6 ) which is what I have, is locked to
only a single processor. The Asus A8M2N-LA (HP relabeled NodusM3-GL8E)
supports single or dual processors. Unless I'm missing something, they
are the exact same motherboard with different limitations imposed on
them. Just trying to figure this thing out although I will probably
take the advice to leave it alone unless I replace both CPU/MB.
