I have a fantom 120gb ext drive and am keeping all my stuff on there ...had
a 120gb internal drive (seagate) that failed at 18mo and has been replaced
by a 160gb maxtor (they didn't have the 120 so they gave me this) ...the
fantom stays put (never moves) and is not in between stuff (plenty of air
circulation)...I turn my stuff off at night and the drive shuts off
too...only the cable modem and voip modem are lit after hours. The fantom
failed shortly after I bought it new ...sent it back and they sent me a new
one (not refurb) with apology...not a hiccup since ...so I am flummoxed as
to where my stuff is safer!! When I look in my tower, the thing has 2 fans
...one for the cpu and one behind the power supply ...no fans are near the
HDD slots which are at the front ...the fantom doesn't have a fan afaik (I
don't hear or feel one).

Yes, if for no other reason than they are moved about receiving more
shock and vibration.

Also they almost always have average quality drives inside ... while you
can buy top quality drives, with the extended warranties that accompany
them, install them in your computer case if you have the room etc and
have a statistically more durable drive solution.
