I know that it is hard to deny something that your have personally 
experienced, but there is nothing in the standard that would make an old 
USB 1 cable not work with USB 2. USB is just two twisted pairs with a 
particular type of connector. USB 2 added some new (tiny) connector types 
to the standard and increased the length of the cable from 3 to 5 metres. 
Nothing that would make an old cable not work. Perhaps your old cable had 
a defect?
