AIF and wav formats are exactly the non-lossy formats you want to save into for compatibility with other playback apps. Audacity's proprietary file format is a nuisance, a side effect of the programs' aspirations to be a real DAW. Get what you pay for, pay for what you get.

'Saving' saves the project in Audacity's format. You need to _export_ the recording in the format you choose for the presentation.

For best quality, export your recording in a format that's uncompressed, not lossy like AIFF and WAV. If it doesn't matter, try one of the other compressed formats.
