I have been looking at Sansas and saw someone with a nice one on the Metro this
last week. Please share before I make another sad mistake.

What's your objective? The "audiophile" objection to these players
is that they can't drive real headphones with high resolution material.

But that's not exactly a true statement. It can be done.

It would be better if the Ipod had a native TOSLINK output, but as
far as I know it doesn't.

That would be wonderful. All _Macs_ including the Mini have the combined optical digital audio input/audio line in/out (minijacks).

Considering the hardware/software features that new iPhone/Touch software has revealed, like Bluetooth in the iPod Touch, it wouldn't surprise me if one of the iPods already has digital audio, but it hasn't been unlocked yet. If not, is it possible to add digital audio in a small music player with current technology [and an inline amp], and keep it affordable [assuming that the 32GB Touch is "affordable"]?

How much uncompressed audio can you put in 32GB? 120GB? [not much fits on my Nano!]. FWIW, I've replaced all my iPod headphones with somewhat better Sennheiser ones and less portable but better Koss PortaPro ones, and haven't looked back.
