Hard to say. You could try the drives in another case or directly 
connected. Some years ago I returned a bunch of external drives and was 
having a generally bad time. Then I figured out when it was safe to use 
USB and when it was not. I now only buy cases that offer both USB and 
FireWire. I see new cases being offered that have USB2, FW400, FW800, and 
eSATA. I have not experimented with eSATA yet.
