I remember WordPerfect and WordStar being the dominant word processors,
with Lotus and MS being real also rans. WordPerfect at the time was a
much better choice for most folks who wanted a word processor. Word
became ubiquitous and now is popular, it didn't win because it was a
better choice, it won because it was available and WP just couldn't ever
quite compete in Windows for whatever reasons. To this day, the concept
of <Reveal Codes> in Word is a difficult one to implement, yet anyone
who ever had to look for why something didn't print right in WordPerfect
or a document didn't format correctly knows why it should have been.

Whether it's shoved down the users throats or just get used by
programmers is irrelevant, it's the results and note I don't normally
use Windows either, haven't for quite some time despite all of the
hassles associated with not doing so.
