All CDs are data CDs. The difference is in the quality of materials
used. A no-name disk probably won't last. I like Mitsui, Taiyo Yuden,
Verbatim, the top versions of each. Some are rated at 30-50 years, but
since computer CDs only date back about 20 years, it's hard to tell.
We have a Technics turntable connected to a Sherwood [or H-K?]
amp/tuner, connected to a Mac, importing with WireTap Pro or Audacity at
the highest quality settings as AIFF. I used to do work for a radio
station and have too many vinyl albums. Stations get many copies and
only play them a few times so they're in very good condition. Instead of
playing albums over and over, we'd copy them to audio tape [portable] or
video tape [at home]. Now we're converting the music to digital as both
AIFF and AAC/MP3.
DVD media is protected better than CDs but you can't play a music DVD in
your car or CD player. Best might be to burn to CD and backup/archive to
DVDs [Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, etc.].
Sounds like a good topic for a user group meeting?
