I talked with our local Mac certified fix it guy. He had me look at
the capacitors to see if I'd need to replace the logic board. I'd
already tried a new hard drive and got nothing. Sure enough, several
of the capacitors had bulged out and were bad. I'm not a soldering
and electronics guru so the cost on replacing the logic board would
be around $600. That means it's time for a new iMac. The one that's
dead is the version right before they started including the iSight
camera. It's a G5 1.8ghz.

wondering if I should/could get an external firewire drive and have
it run the OS on the iMac, or just buy a new iMac. Any thoughts?
Depends on how old your iMac is. Tell me more.
