What sort of thing are you trying to sell? An author with a book is way
different than a widget.

At a certain level, marketing methods will function in similar ways, no matter what you're selling. Networking and building social capital are probably also similar. That's why I'm interested in list members' experiences--if they got anything out of their blogs besides passing the time.

My preference, under any circumstances, is to show only finished pieces of writing that have gone through multiple drafts (making blogging even more time-consuming). A blog, for me, is 1) a way to have a set of on-line writing samples for prospective employers to see; and 2) a way to build an audience for future works. I believe that you can do this without being crass or dull. I DON'T want to rant, emote, freely express myself, etc.

I'm basically trying to sell a) myself as a prospective employee; and b) trying to establish a marketing platform to sell works to publishers in the future (according to some of the experts, you submit your manuscript and your marketing plan at the same time). Since I'm looking for jobs in associations' publications departments, among other places, there's a certain overlap between the two categories

That's why I asked about other list members' experiences with blogging; if they got anything out of it, and if it's worth the large investment of time.
