Recently for Military service and other things we have been asked for the actual SS card, not a copy or a duplicate.

If you were to change jobs they might ask for the original SS card.

I know we get hung up on the number but the SS administration will tell you it is an official US document. Not to be defaced or damaged.

Oh when you go to retire it is I think one of the documents they ask you to show that you are who you claim to be. (I know of some folks that had a heck of a time getting some Government benefits as they could not show proof of who they were!)

Well, a little nitpicky, but not so much "ID card" as "ID number". I've -never- been asked to provide the actual card as an ID. (I lost mine decades ago and have never bothered to replace it--have
never needed it.)
