Actually, Mozart's death was widely mourned, and his funeral--at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna--was crowded with mourners. (BTW, the movie Amadeus, though colorful, was fictional in this respect.)

After Mozart died, Haydn wrote tributes to him, and Beethoven imitated him in his early work. (In fact, Beethoven had special cause to be sorry at Mozart's death; he had wanted Mozart as a teacher, and had to settle for Haydn.)

How odd--though not without precedent--that Jackson's death should cause such a renaissance in sales of his works. But he hadn't done anything new in years, and the style of pop music of which he espoused is no longer cutting edge. In one sense, you could say that he has already been dead for a long time.

Not a terrific example of the failure to report important news, though. Michael Jackson was a pop star. He sold a lot of records once. He's not important to civilization as we know it. His death has little practical significance except to sell a lot more albums-- which probably wouldn't have sold if he were still alive. This is definitely news we could have waited for.

I bet Mozart's contemporaries said the same things about him.

I also bet that long after Bill Gates is forgotten, people will still be thrilled by MJ.

BTW, without Googling it, who invented the transistor? the microprocessor? the 1st programming language?
