I wasn't discussing switchers there, I was addressing Tom's question
as to whether MS share was going down, which I discussed in terms
of Apple's share rising. Apple's financial report generally does give the
number of computers sold (though it doesn't generally give a breakdown
into categories). From the report, Apple increased its computer sales
over the same quarter last year, while pc sales in general reportedly have
declined over the same period. This suggests an increase in share for
Apple to me.

Going back to the switching subject, I reiterate that anecdotal evidence
is as (un)reliable as an online poll. You only hear from those who have
strong feelings. Furthermore, with anecdotal evidence, you tend also
to only remember certain kinds of cases. If you want to truly estimate
the proportions of switchers, you'd have to do a proper survey. Microsoft
and Apple probably do this and share their information with select
partners, but they don't share it with the likes of us. But why else would
Microsoft be running its "laptop hunters" commercials unless they
had evidence that they were being hurt by Apple?

Again, this is a fairly simplistic model and not necessarily a good
description of what happens in the real world. Let's wait for
Apple's financial report and see how mac sales compare to
windows pc sales over the same period to get an idea of
what is happening right now.

Do these financial statements indicate the number of units that were
sold or just the dollar amount of income from those sales? Also, how
would a financial statement show how many sales were made to buyers
who were switching? It seems as though the only way to determine
those who switch is through anecdotal information.
