I have a HP Scanjet 8250 (USB) sitting next to my MBP 15" that I can't use while booted in Leopard. I spent considerably more time than half an hour testing HP drivers, bonjour, generic printers, etc. only to discover it wasn't going to work at all. All the software loads fine, but the scanner won't work. The same is true for a desktop HP photoprinter (USB). I have to Boot Camp into XP to use either of these devices, which is an incredible cramp on the work flow. Ironically, I can print to a HP 5500 poster printer from Leopard, over Apple Talk or TCP/IP on a Novell and MS driven network; and print locally (USB) to an HP Laserjet 4050. Go figure.
HP has a terrible track record when it comes to device drivers. I have seen them include drivers that were years out of date and seen their installers scramble both Macs and PCs. I have made a lot of money over the years thanks to HP. General advice is to avoid HP unless you know a lot about what you are doing. Every HP scanner that I have seen (and I see them rarely) has been bizarre.

One of this weeks highlights on the Apple side was a newer iMac inexplicably loosing it's association with its Time Machine backup (over seven months worth).
Time Machine is oh so good and oh so bad. Its functioning is so complex that I would call it a form of artificial intelligence. It will work correctly through all sorts of situations and then suddenly decide to do something else. First thing I do is nothing. Much of the time it starts working again all on its own. If not there are all sorts of arcane remedies posted on the Web. First thing to look for is a partial backup file.If you see that you should stop TM and delete that one file.
