I don't have an actual answer for you (sorry), but this might be worth a trip to an Apple store to let a genius figure it out, or perhaps wipe his system and restore. If he's still figuring out the mouse he can't possibly have that much important data on there.
Is this a refurbed Mac? How else would he have iChat and AIM accounts going? And if he's in the habit of roaming around the house in his birthday suit, he might want to put a piece of tape over the camera lens. (-:
