Where would I make the change you suggest above? And, why would it be seeing the Ubuntu splash screen if it cannot see the drive. It apparently does see it but then somehow changes its mind and says it doesn't exist. I thought maybe I had a flaky USB port for the external drive but I just swapped that connection and got the same results. :(
