It is currently set using the Ethernet. It connects to my wireless
DSL modem/router. The printer is connected to iMac and shared with
our wireless laptops. My iMac is over 7 years old, so I was thinking
when I replace it that I would make it my wireless print server. I
was wondering if I could just make it wireless or if I am going to
need to keep it connected to the wireless router via the Ethernet. I
hope this makes sense.
Makes perfect sense.
However instead of using the iMac as a wireless print server, consider a
wireless printer. We recently bought a Brother HL-2170W laser printer,
http://www.brother-usa.com/Printer/ModelDetail.aspx?ProductID=hl2170W.
It was easy to set up with our Macs and not too bad with the PCs either.
Even works when driver isn't installed, as long as one Mac or PC with
drivers is running. [The Linksys print server that I picked up cheap on
eBay is still in the box.]
There are both laser and inkjet, B/W and color, wireless printers,
several manufacturers. Look at those. And find one on sale with a good
rebate so it's half price!
Can't your DSL modem/router be used as a bridge? One of our Macs doesn't
have a WiFi card but connects with our other computers wirelessly
through the DSL modem via ethernet cable. If your iMac is close to the
modem, you can use that as a bridge. Which DSL modem do you have? Mine
is Westell 327W.
