Since the machine is new enough to be returnable I would skip the tough stuff.
Keep the computer disconnected from the LAN and WiFi off. Use the Ultimate Boot Disk to delete all the partitions on the hard drive. Then install the OS. At that point you should be able to tell if the computer is clean. Then proceed step by step and check the machine at each step. If suddenly you find yourself polluted you'll know what step caused it.
