You might want to see if other bluetooth devices are in the immediate
surroundings.

A couple of years ago, I shared a hotel room with a friend whilst on
vacation. I was trying to help him pair his new headset to his new
phone. It didn't work at first but I soon realized that the headset
had paired with my laptop across the room from us.

Similarly, I've gone to my car to pre heat it to clean the windscreen,
etc. I've seen it acknowledge the presence of my phone even though
that phone was still in my house at the time.
