I totally agree--it's the photographer, not the fancy equipment, that makes the picture. Witness, for example, the cult of the Holga, a toy camera from China that comes in a wide variety of colors and retails for around $30. The Holga has quite a following among professional photographers, who win prizes with pictures taken on Holgas.

In the DC area, you can pick up a Holga today at Penn Camera.
