Some are and some are not. The ones that come in big boxes are that size because people stack them up. The inside of these boxes is mostly empty space. People are shopping for something they can add to or replace in an existing stack. So we are really talking furniture here, not technology.

My 20-year-old receiver is 2-inches high and 10-inches across. My newer DVD player is about that size too.

I'm sure that if you shop around you will find receivers the size of a walkman or maybe smaller.
